CLASSROOM CHOICE

Caldecott Award Winner

"He was so scared and worried.

Being helpless, he felt hopeless."

Sylvester loves to collect pebbles, and he can’t believe his luck when he finds a magic pebble that can make wishes come true. But, faced with life or death danger, Sylvester turns himself into a pebble. Now, unable to hold himself- he is a pebble after all- he is unable to wish himself back into a donkey. Steig is a master storyteller and this one won the Caldecott for best picture book.

From the Reviewer A.A., a retired librarian:

I loved the sense of family love in this story. My favorite part is when Mr. Duncan finds the red pebble. I read this to my middle school students and they loved it.
